General info

The Ptasi Raj Nature Reserve, established in 1959, is a sanctuary for waterfowl and wading birds located at the mouth of the Śmiała Wisła River on Sobieszewo Island, near Gdańsk, Poland. Encompassing approximately 198 hectares, the reserve features two coastal lakes—Ptasi Raj and Karaś—surrounded by marshes, meadows, and forests. This diverse habitat supports over 200 bird species, with 45 known to nest within the area.

The reserve serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds, including geese, ducks, swans, and various shorebirds. Notable breeding species include the little tern (Sternula albifrons), ringed plover (Charadrius hiaticula), common snipe (Gallinago gallinago), and the Eurasian bittern (Botaurus stellaris). Occasionally, rare species such as the common shelduck (Tadorna tadorna), common eider (Somateria mollissima), and Eurasian oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) have been observed nesting in the reserve.

Visitors can explore the reserve via a 6-kilometer nature trail equipped with educational boards and two observation towers offering panoramic views of the lakes and surrounding landscapes. The trail begins near the bus terminus at the end of Nadwiślańska Street in Górki Wschodnie, where a small parking area is also available. The reserve is open year-round, with birdwatching opportunities peaking during migration periods in spring and autumn. Bringing binoculars is recommended to enhance the birdwatching experience.

In addition to its avian inhabitants, the Ptasi Raj Nature Reserve is home to over 320 plant species, including protected halophilous (salt-loving) plants. The area also provides habitat for other wildlife, such as various mammal species and, on rare occasions, seals.

The reserve's diverse ecosystems and strategic location make it a vital refuge for both resident and migratory species, contributing significantly to regional biodiversity conservation efforts. Its accessibility and well-maintained facilities offer nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers an excellent opportunity to observe a wide array of species in their natural habitats.
